What-If Portfolio is not a financial adviser. Nothing on this site is investment advice, a recommendation to buy or sell any security, or a solicitation of any kind.

Educational purposes only

What-If Portfolio is a free tool that lets you construct hypothetical portfolios and visualise how they would have performed based on historical price data, or how they might perform based on assumed future returns. Every chart, statistic, and projection on this site is a simulation — not a real trade, a real account, or a real forecast.

Past performance is not future performance

One of the oldest warnings in finance is also one of the most ignored: the fact that an asset, sector, or strategy returned a certain amount in the past tells you very little about what it will do next. Markets change. Companies fail. Sectors that dominated one decade often lag the next. Use historical simulations as a way to understand mechanics and risk, not as a prediction of what will happen tomorrow.

Hypothetical results have inherent limitations

Our simulations assume things real investors cannot: instant execution, zero trading costs, zero taxes, perfect rebalancing, and the ability to hold through extreme drawdowns without panic-selling. Real-world returns are almost always lower than backtested returns, sometimes substantially so.

Data accuracy is not guaranteed

Price data is sourced from the public Yahoo Finance API and supplementary providers. It may be delayed, contain errors, omit corporate actions (splits, dividends), or be incomplete for some assets and markets. We make no guarantee of accuracy and you should verify any number that matters to you against an authoritative source.

Talk to a qualified adviser

Before making any actual investment decision, please consult a licensed financial adviser, tax professional, or both. They can evaluate your personal situation — your income, your debts, your timeline, your risk tolerance, your tax bracket — in a way that no general-purpose tool ever can.

Crypto, leverage, and high-volatility assets

Cryptocurrencies, leveraged ETFs, and certain other instruments available in this tool are extremely volatile and can lose most of their value in short periods. Treat simulations involving these assets with particular skepticism.
