About What-If Portfolio

What-If Portfolio was built for curious investors who want to explore possibilities without signing up, paying subscriptions, or sitting through sales calls. You land on the page, you build a portfolio, you see what could have been. That is the whole product.

Why we built it

Every existing portfolio backtester we tried suffered from at least one of three sins: gated behind an account wall, buried in a confusing UI, or so feature-bloated that the one thing you actually wanted to do took ten clicks. We wanted a tool that did the obvious thing immediately — search a stock, set a weight, see the chart — and got out of the way.

What we do

You can build a portfolio of stocks, ETFs, cryptocurrencies, and bonds from any major global market. You can simulate how it would have performed over the last 1, 3, 5, or 10 years (or its full available history). You can switch into "Future" mode and project forward using your own assumed return and volatility numbers. You can run advanced simulations with multiple lump sums and recurring contributions.

All of it works without an account. Your configuration is stored in your browser. If you want to save simulations or unlock unlimited assets, you can create a free account or unlock Pro for a one-time $14.50 early-access payment.

Where the data comes from

Historical price data is sourced from the public Yahoo Finance API and a small number of supplementary providers. It covers most listed equities, ETFs, and major cryptocurrencies across global exchanges. Data may occasionally be delayed or contain gaps — please see our Disclaimer for the full caveat.

How we make money

Honestly, two ways:

  • Ads. Free users see non-intrusive Google AdSense ads. They are confined to clearly-labelled slots and never overlap your simulation. Pro users see none.
